This is what stood at Rhinebeck’s main intersection back in the mid 1800’s. These buildings miraculously survived the great fire of 1864, but were demolished, possibly before 1876, to rebuild in their place this brick structure and the other surrounding buildings. (The new buildings seem to appear on the 1876 Gray’s map). Originally the new brick building was Smillie’s bicycle shop. Through the years on the Sanborn maps, it is marked as a hardware store.

It was quite the corner in 1886, one shop, a barbershop also selling guns and cigars, then around the corner a saloon. A grocery store and a bakery were nearby if anyone got hungry.

Just across the street (south side of E Mkt St.) is this old building, once a hotel.
